This coin was minted during the reign of Emperor Romanus IV Diogenes 1068 - 1071 A.D. in the Byzantine Empire. Made from an ancient copper/ bronze alloy. The obverse shows facing bust of Christ, with pallium and colobrium, with hand raised in benediction, and holding scroll. The reverse depicts facing bust of Virgin Mary orans, nimbate and wearing pallium and maphorium. Very fine / almost extra fine coin condition with amazing details. 27.2mm diameter, weighing 11.29 grams. This type is one of the first coins ever to depict Jesus Christ.
The coin is safely held by a 4 prong setting, made from jewelers bronze with a matte finish. Bail inside diameter is 6.5mm.
