This coin was minted in Japan during the late Edo (Tokugawa) period 1837-1868 under Emperor Kōmei. Tenpō Ichibugin coin with 99.1% silver content. Measures 24.2 x 16.3 mm (0.95 x 0.64 inches). Weighs 8.65 grams. Very fine condition, original patina.
Obverse: Incuse stamp 定 (= Jo) over 4 kanji ("Guaranteed, Ginza (Silver Mint), Jōze (Mint Official)) in rectangle surrounded by 20 sakuras (cherry blosoms) one of them inverted. Bottom left 2 strokes of 是 crossed.
Reverse: 3 vertical kanji ("1 Bu Silver") in rectangle surrounded by 20 sakuras (cherry blosoms) one of them inverted.
Set in a handmade sterling silver setting with a polished surface. The bail will accommodate chains up to 4.5mm in diameter.
